It’s that time of year. You’re hosting the big holiday dinner, and you are solidly into planning mode. Then, somewhere in the midst of finalizing guest lists and developing menus, it hits you: Your home could really use a makeover! A remodeled home would surely impress your holiday guests. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but it’s far too late at this point. We’re two weeks out from Thanksgiving and about six from Christmas, which leaves you very little time for a major remodel. A Christmas deadline might be reasonable for some contractors, but one of my rules of construction is to expect the unexpected. One setback could mean celebrating the holidays in an unfinished space. It’s just not worth it!

Remodeling projects, when done correctly, take time to plan and implement, and it’s not worth cutting corners just to speed up the process. But, all is not lost! You can still pull off some quick and simple changes to refresh your home in time for your holiday guests.

Furniture

If you have the means, and a little time to plan and shop, then a new furniture group can do wonders for a room. Try to focus on public spaces, like the living and dining rooms, where your guests will spend the most time. For overnight guests, maybe your guest room could use a comfortable new bedroom suite. If you can’t purchase all new pieces, take a look at the arrangement of your current furniture. Does the layout feel comfortable and inviting? Try moving some pieces around, and see how it feels. Or does something seem lacking? You might need to add an end table or side chair. A little tweak here and there can really give your room new life.

Paint

Of all the changes you can make, I believe that paint gives you the most impact for the least amount of time and money. You don’t even need to make a dramatic color change, although I think that’s fun. You might like your current color, but perhaps it feels worn and tired. An updated shade in the same color family can still give you a fresh look. Paint also doesn’t require a major commitment. Go ahead and match your current furniture and flooring, even if you plan to tackle a major remodel later. You can always repaint when the time comes.

Rugs

New rugs, runners, and even bathmats can give your space a little pop of color and an updated look. A soft rug can add a touch of coziness to your living room or guest bedroom. Rugs can also help define spaces and anchor a room, especially if your home has a more open floorplan. Consider a rug in a color or pattern that enhances the current finishes in your room. This can add another layer to the design, giving your room a more elevated look. I actually did the opposite in my office by removing a large rug. It really did change the feel of the room.

Accessories

This last category is a bit of a catch-all, but even small touches can change the look and feel of your home. With the holidays approaching, we’re all starting to put up our seasonal décor, which can really set the mood for a party or gathering. Take time to also consider your artwork, photos, throw pillows, and other touches that can make a room. Dig out the framed art and family photos that you’ve been meaning to hang. (I’m guilty of that one!) Toss some cozy afghans on the living room couch, or add new seat cushions to the dining room chairs. For overnight guests, invest in a new comforter set for the bed. And don’t forget the bathroom! New towel sets and bath accessories can add pop to a boring powder room.

If you can’t do any of the above, then fluff the couch cushions, run the vacuum over the floor, and great your guests with a warm smile. After all, your friends and family are there to spend time with you, not your house. And that’s what truly matters.
